Are Upgraded cabinets a good investment?
There are some important questions.
Do your dimensions support standard cabinet sizes?
If you are keeping the same general cabinet layout you do not usually need custom sized cabinets. Custom built cabinets explode the price of the renovation
What finish do you prefer?
Upgrades can be worthwhile for wood grain cabinets. There is a great deal of variation between grain and finish and upgrading to get what you really like is worth consideration. Otherwise, with painted cabinets, finish thickness is the big consideration. This thickness/quality of finish directly relates to the durability of appearance. If you have young children or pups this is something to think about.
What is the value of your home?
The real estate rule of thumb is 10%. If a kitchen remodel goes over 10% of the homes value, you will not recover the entire investment when you sale the home. Personally, for a non-long term home, I would suggest 8%.
How many cabinets do you need?
*Eliminating unnecessary cabinets can completely open up a kitchen, making feel larger and seem much larger.
*Often you can add one 90×24 pantry cabinet, eliminate smaller wall cabinets and net gain storage space. Plus, the pantry cabinet is much more flexible storage space.
